Port supports government boost to seafarers’ rights

Following today’s (Thursday 10 October) news that the government will be looking to introduce new legalisation called The Employment Rights Bill to Parliament this week, Portsmouth International Port fully supports this move to protect seafarers’ pay and conditions. The bill alongside the Seafarers Wages Act, is now likely to come into force on 1 December. 

Portsmouth International Port’s long-term customer Brittany Ferries has long called for a joined up approach on both sides of the channel, having signed a voluntary charter in Paris last year.

Cllr Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council said: “We fully support moves to protect seafarers, who provide a critical service seen right here in Portsmouth.

“As a city-owned port we believe in ethical standards extending all the way from pay to working conditions.

“The recent British Ports Association conference held here in Portsmouth has only reinforced how vital shipping is to the UK’s economy, delivering essential trade and also making sure passengers can safely travel.

“Our seafarers need to know they are valued and supported, this announcement gives real power to protect them from being exploited.

“We would however welcome a conversation about how this will be implemented, as it currently appears ports will be responsible for enforcement, which comes with significant challenges.”
