The UK's best connected port

Environmental pioneers

Solar panels at the port

We don’t believe in platitudes and want our actions to speak for themselves.

As a city-owned port our relationship with residents means everything, we want them to feel proud of their port and it’s
important we show we’re leading by example.

We want to work with customers who share our values and show that the maritime sector, one of the oldest industries, is
at the cutting edge of sustainable innovation.

To make sure our plans have an impact, we will be open and transparent with our air quality monitoring data. This means investing in the latest technology to capture what’s happening at the port and what’s having an effect.

We’ve teamed up with scientists and academics to turn the port into a living laboratory to trial the latest in environmental
power prototypes.

In the next 12 – 24 months our focus is:

Lithium-ion battery for energy storage

Shore power for small cruise ships

Processing freight away from the port to reduce impact on the road network

Over 24 months our focus is:

Smart freight gates

Smart passenger booking

Over 5 years our focus is:

Our ambition to reach carbon net-zero by 2030, and become the UK’s first zero emission port by 2050

Alternative power generation technology, such as hybrid LNG barges and shoreside power

Net energy provider from whole site solar PV and wind turbines, including solar car port
